We are pleased to announce the appointment of three new members of staff.

Alan Torrington joins us as Head Groundsman in February.

Alan originally joined us as a young trainee in 2003 and was part of the team who won ‘Out Ground of the Year’ at The Walker Ground.  He worked here for 5 years before moving onto to gain new skills.

He has extensive experience preparing cricket pitches for club and county cricket for over 15 years, having worked at Hornsey, Royal Hospital Chelsea and Winchmore Cricket Club.

We are delighted to have Alan back on board and look forward to seeing him continue to improve our grounds.

Sam Pinnock and Stefan Drumea have been appointed as Bar Managers.

We'd like to wish them all the best of luck in their new roles.

Fireworks

We are so pleased to report a fantastic fireworks event on Saturday 3rd November that was attended by over 7,000 local people.  The weather was excellent and members of the local community were treated to a stunning display matched to the soundtrack to the film 'The Greatest Showman'.

There was music from the band 'Radio Rising' and a vast array of food available from the many stalls on site.

Thanks so much to the many volunteers that helped on the night.  Without you the event is not possible.

Watch this space for information on our 2019 event.....which is going to take place on Saturday 2nd November.

In other news.......

The Trustees are pleased to welcome a new Associate Trustee to the organisation.

Richard Ellwood has been a member of Southgate Adelaide Cricket Club for over 20 years and brings a huge knowledge and experience of the general running of the ground.  He has been a vital member of the Fireworks team and we really value his enthusiasm and 'get it done' attitude.

We continue to look for new Trustees and Volunteers at the ground.  If you are interested in finding out more, please check out our recruitment section.

Peter Jouning - 'The Walkers of Southgate and Middlesex'

We are delighted to be able to announce that Peter Jouning of Southgate Cricket Club, has written a book called ‘The Walkers of Southgate and Middlesex’.

This is the extraordinary story of the seven cricketing Walker brothers. They founded Southgate Cricket Club in 1855 and Middlesex County Cricket Club in 1864. They left an indelible mark on cricket in the middle of the 19th Century, which laid the foundations for the game we know today. Their story and other tales and anecdotes catch the flavour of those halcyon days as this wonderful game evolved along its ever more popular path.

We would like to congratulate Peter on the achievement of writing this book and recording a very important period in our grounds history.

If you would like to purchase a copy of the book, you can buy one from the office at the ground or at Amazon via https://goo.gl/p3wNjG

The picture right is Peter presenting a copy of his book to Rob Johnson (Cricket Chair of Southgate CC) at Lord’s where the Walker brothers played so much of their cricket.

September & October 2018

The Cricket season winds down during September and then our winter sports (junior football, rugby and lacrosse) start on 29th and 30th September.  With such a great summer and September, we expect pitch conditions to be firm through October and November.

As the staff at the ground look to start the winter season, the main focus of our volunteers will be to work on organising the annual fireworks display on Saturday 3rd November.  This is the main source of fundraising for the Walker Ground and over 8,000 spectators are expected on the night.

The event is not possible without the help of volunteers and we have always been so pleased that both members of our clubs and the local community have always stepped forward to make the event a success and to help ensure that this much needed income comes into the charity.

If you would like to volunteer on the night, please make contact with the office at office@thewalkerground.co.uk

We continue to look for new Trustees and Volunteers at the ground.  If you are interested in finding out more, please check out our recruitment section.
